To test filters, we pour hot water through a dry one and taste the water after it cooled. Grindz is not going to magically remove years of coffee residue, but it will keep a clean grinder in top shape without disassembling the mill and scrubbing the burrs every time. That is what I asked when I first saw the Hario V60.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI was used to Melitta-type filtercone holders that have 1, 2, 3 holes in the bottom. The fewer holes, the longer the coffee and water tend to infuse. More infusion means more extraction of soluble solids, which means more flavor in the cup.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut what I found was that the Hario V60 can result in excellent brews if you use the right pouring technique. It's all about the pour. You don't just dump a load of water on top of coffee grounds in a V60 and get a good cup. It doesn't do it for you ... you must coax the extraction of solids from the grounds, and this involves both a good pace and good pattern in how you add water to the coffee.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI would say that you need, yes need, a kettle with a thin spout similar to a Hario Buono to get a good cup from the V60. The Pro has some great improvements over previous models - an improved hand crack, redesigned jar for better stability, and a hard plastic lid that locks into place. The added burr stability makes for a far more consistent coarse grind. Best of all, grind adjustments are greatly simplified - you can now adjust the grind directly below the burrs, rather than taking apart the entire hopper. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The Skerton mill has ceramic burrs and a very sturdy construction. The grind quality is very good, and the mill grinds efficiently, fairly quickly, but not too fast. Like any manual mill it takes some elbow grease to crank out a grind, but the workout is worth it!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It has a conical burr design, so it can do a range of grinds from espresso to a decent French press grind. The top part is plastic, the bottom is a glass jar. The top acts as a lid, so technically you could grind and then store the coffee in the base; but who would do that? It does make a handy travel grinder - especially if you remove the glass part and grind directly into a brewer, like a cone or an Aeropress. (There are some very insignificant solids found in the bottom of the cup, but nowhere near as much as a French Press, or coffee brewed with Swissgold brand filters).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat I liked was the increased body in the cup, and in many cases an overall greater coffee intensity. I had to make my grind slightly coarser to work with the steel filter, and had to apply a bit more pressure when plunging the Aeropress. This filter is hassle-free, easy to wipe clean and re-use. Be sure the wash it out before storing so coffee doesn't clog the holes.I am pretty sure you will notice a difference in the cup flavor when you swap the paper Aeropress filters for the stainless steel version. For fun I have also experimented with using a combination of a paper filter and the screen.
