Ethiopia Dry Process Benti Nenka
Ethiopia Dry Process Benti Nenka
Ethiopia Dry Process Benti Nenka
Expansive profile that could almost pass for a wet process coffee if not for the hefty dried fruit flavors. Natural dried peach, apricot, hints of blueberry, fig, fragrant spice, orange glaze, and tea-like finish. City to Full City.
Full Cupping Notes
Impressive fruit flavors are juicy and sweet, and when roasted light, yields the fragrant aromatics of high caliber Guji coffee. We actually thought it could almost pass for a wet process coffee in a blind tasting if not for the hefty, sticky-type dried fruit flavors. The dry fragrance shows complex dried fruit sweetness, mango and peach, accented by dark honey, and aromatic accents. Adding hot water to the grounds brings up a very nice depth of sweetness, panela raw sugar, apricot, and dried tropical fruits. Running my spoon through the wetted crust released a fragrant red honey note. City roasts are aromatic, and even slightly floral, adding a graceful side to heavier impressions of fruit. Fragrant stone fruits and dried berry flavors find solid footing in the brew, but manage to leave room for more delicate, aromatic aspects of the cup profile. Natural dried peach and apricot came up as the coffee cooled, along with hints of blueberry, and fig. The profile is quite expansive, and opens up to notes of fragrant spice, red berries, tangy orange glaze, with tea-like aspect in the finish. Very nice dry process for light roasting, and based on cup flavors and our previous experience with Benti, I'm certain the fruits will stand up to Full City roasting, albeit with a bittersweet base note.

Origin & Farm Notes
The Benti Nenka processing site is located in a village ("Kebele") of the same name within the Hambela Wamena region, Ethiopia's Guji Zone. It's a sister site to Hambela Dabaye, that you may be familiar with from previous years from which we also have a wet processed lot available right now. This is from the same station owner, Kedir Hassan, a proficient and capable engineer as well as coffee farmer. He's erected a few stations in Hambela Wamena region, some producing both washed and dry process ("naturals") coffees, including Benti Nenka. Of course he did not complete them on his own, and thanks to his long standing connection with the the people in this area, he had much needed community support on his side. Kedir splits bamboo reeds for constructing his drying beds, so they're flat and quite sturdy. You see a lot of chicken wire used at other sites, which tends to sag, creating uneven coffee layers. This dry process lot is only made up of coffee from the small holders in the Benti Nenka area, whose farms span an altitude range of roughly 1900 to 2100 meters above sea level.
