A bit more "umph" than your average Central American coffee. Mildly sweet, bracing acidity, with attractive spiced fruit accents, and bittersweet finish. City to Full City+. Good for espresso.

Product Overview
Full Cupping Notes

At City to City+ roast level, the dry fragrance was accented by sweet smells of unrefined cane sugar, mild cocoa tones, and a hint of ripe apple. The wetted grounds offered a more aromatic sweetness, with a note of dulce de leche caramel, along with vanilla bean, and dark chocolate accents. In the cup, light roasts were pleasantly bracing, with accents of citrus and Rooibos tea that feed into the acidity, and connect top notes of mulling spices and apple cider to a bittersweet finish. At Full City, the mouthfeel is substantial on the palate, and chocolatey profiles, with caramelized sweetness are contributed from the roast taste. La Folie is mildly sweet, with attractive flavor profiles, and makes sense it would do so well roasted light or dark. It packs a bit more 'umph' than your average bittersweet Central American coffee, which has made it a "daily drinker" for me.

Farm Notes

Origin & Farm Notes

Just outside the town of Antigua is the small village of San Felipe de Jesus. And among the houses on the twisting and narrow side streets is an old coffee farm called La Folie. It is owned by Penny Matheu, having been divided off from the greater Matheu family lands and the neighboring Finca Filadelfia. The farm operates as a small estate of 91 acres. The last time we visited the farm was right after they placed top 5 in the Guatemalan Cup of Excellence competition (despite the fact it was bombarded with rain and mud in a violent storm the day previous). It's a beautiful old-style farm at 1700 meters above sea level, planted chiefly in Bourbon, with Caturra and some Typica as well. The manager, Don Julio Valencia, lived on the farm at that time, and is in some of the photos we have from that visit. The plantings are well-organized in blocks and rows, a classic Antigua style farm on flat, fertile grounds. This is our second lot from La Folie this year, and another prime example of clean wet process Antiguan coffee, with crowd pleasing sweetness, and bright cup character.
